The Attendance and Discipline committee of 2013

In the spring of 2013 the leadership team at Lee high school was asked to identify the major needs that our school was experiencing.  Through the gathering and analysis of data analysis  from teachers the leadership team identified three main areas of need. One of these areas was attendance and discipline. I volunteered myself to act as the chair person of the subcommittee that was formed to develop solutions to the issue of student attendance and discipline.  Through the work that I did as leader of the committee we were able to research best practices, identify successful models, and submit a through proposal that would act as a method of solving the student attendance issues that many teachers were experiencing. We were successful in creating a new staff position now known as the attendance outreach counselor. The role of the attendance outreach counselor (AOC) is to act as a school based support system where multiple stakeholders, school-based interventions, and community based interventions are utilized to ensure that students feel accepted and confident that attending classes is key to success.  The AOC is focused on accountability, support, consequences, engaging connections, relevant education, understanding, purpose, exploring, opportunity, caring, self-esteem and thinking outside the box when working with at risk students.

Within this blog are samples of the documents I used to support the development of the new staff position within our school.

The researched data to support the new position

This data was collected by members of the committee.

This document was generated to assist the teachers with the sequence of events relating to dicipline and attendance issues.

Leadership team presentation

I presented this committee generated presentation. It contains evidence which supports the generation of a staff position that would be solely focused on attendance.

(* our initial title for the position was "attendance dean" we later changed it to "Attendance Outreach Counselor")
